When a pipe bursts at 6am, nobody scrolls through ten plumbers and compares reviews. They tap the first result that looks local and trustworthy, and they call. That’s why Google Ads can be the fastest way for a plumber to fill the diary, and also the fastest way to burn a few thousand dollars if the account is set up badly.
I run Google Ads for trades businesses, and plumbing is one of the best-performing niches I work in. Here’s how it works when it’s done properly.
Why Google Ads suits plumbers so well
Plumbing is an urgent, high-value, local purchase. Think about the jobs:
- Emergency callouts and blocked drains: $300 to $900 on the day
- Hot water system replacements: $1,500 to $4,000
- Bathroom and gas work: bigger tickets again
Those customers search with intent. They aren’t browsing, they’re buying. If you appear at the top of Google at that moment, you get the call. That’s a very different proposition from social media, where you interrupt people who weren’t looking for a plumber.
The campaigns that actually make money
1. Emergency and urgent searches
Searches like “emergency plumber near me” and “blocked drain [suburb]” convert fastest. These should run as call-focused campaigns with ad scheduling that matches when you can really answer the phone. There’s no point paying for a click at 2am if your phone goes to voicemail.
2. Hot water systems
This is the highest-margin job for most plumbers and a lot of them under-advertise it. A dedicated campaign for “hot water system replacement” and “hot water repairs” with its own landing page almost always beats lumping it into a general plumbing ad.
3. Specific high-value services
Gas fitting, bathroom renovations, leak detection. Each deserves its own tightly themed ad group so the ad, the keyword and the page all say the same thing.
What does it cost?
Click prices for plumbing vary a lot by city and season. As a rough guide, competitive terms often land in the range of several dollars up to $15 or more per click, and a good account turns that into leads costing somewhere between $40 and $150 each. Against a $400 callout or a $2,500 hot water job, the maths works, as long as you answer the phone.

The mistakes that burn plumbers’ budgets
- Sending everyone to the homepage. Visitors want to see “emergency plumber, call now”, not your company history.
- No negative keywords. Without them you pay for clicks from people searching “plumbing apprenticeship” or “how to fix a leaking tap”.
- Bidding on the whole country. You can only service your area. Radius and suburb targeting matters.
- No call tracking. If you can’t see which ads produce calls, you can’t tell what’s working.
- Running ads 24/7 with nobody answering. Missed calls are wasted money.
Make Google Ads and local SEO work together
Ads give you calls this week. Local SEO gives you free calls for years. The best results come from running both. Your ads buy visibility while your Google Maps ranking builds, then you can turn the budget down. I explain the organic side in my local SEO guide.
Let me take care of it
I run Google Ads for plumbers personally. You talk to me, not an account manager, there’s no lock-in contract, and you own your ad account. I’ll set up call tracking so you can see exactly how many calls the ads produce.
