Google Ads for Mechanics and Auto Workshops: How to Fill Your Bays

Ciao.Marketing·6 October 2026

A busy workshop has a very particular problem. The bays are full one week and quiet the next, and the franchises down the road spend big on advertising. Google Ads is one of the best ways for an independent workshop to smooth that out, because people search for a mechanic at exactly the moment they need one.

I’ve spent years working with automotive businesses, including a long-term multi-site local SEO partnership with a Sydney service centre, so this is a trade I know well.

What drivers actually search for

Car owners search for specific problems and services, and each one is a different opportunity:

Search typeExamplesWhy it’s valuable
Urgent”mechanic near me”, “car won’t start”Fast conversion, same-day jobs
Service”log book service [suburb]”, “car service near me”Predictable, repeatable work
Specific repairs”brake repair”, “clutch replacement”, “aircon regas”Higher ticket jobs
Diagnostics”check engine light”, “car diagnostic near me”Builds trust and leads to repairs
Compliance”rego inspection”, “roadworthy”Steady demand, easy to explain

The log-book service opportunity

Many drivers still believe they have to service a new car at the dealership to keep the warranty. In Australia that’s generally not the case, and a licensed independent workshop can usually service them without affecting warranty. Ads and pages that explain this clearly are very persuasive, and they win customers who might otherwise go to the dealership.

Don’t forget mobile mechanics

If you work from a van, your advantage is coverage. A fixed workshop competes in one suburb, but a mobile mechanic can show up across a whole region. I’d build service-area campaigns plus suburb pages for each area you cover, and use ads for “mobile mechanic near me” across the whole service radius. Missed-call text-back is especially important when you’re under a car and can’t answer. I explain how to rank across many suburbs on my mobile mechanics page.

One job is the start, not the end

The real value of a workshop customer isn’t the first job, it’s the ten years of servicing, rego and repairs that follow. That changes how you should think about acquiring customers: you can afford to pay more per lead than the first invoice suggests.

That makes automation especially powerful in this trade:

  • Automatic service-due and rego reminders
  • A review request after every pickup
  • Follow-up messages that bring lapsed customers back

My marketing automation guide covers how it works.

What does it cost?

Most workshops do well with $1,500 to $3,500 a month across ads and local SEO. With jobs ranging from a few hundred to a couple of thousand dollars, and customers who return for years, a few new regulars a month typically covers the investment. See my Google Ads budget guide.

Pair ads with local SEO

Ads fill the bays this week. Ranking in the Google Maps pack for “mechanic near me” fills them for years. The two work best together, and my local SEO guide explains the organic side.
